On their first album, Hide and Seek, she brings some heavy riffing and fiery crunch to the six-string attack that's not worlds different than that of Standard Fare, but it's enough to give the sound a little boost of energy and power that works well with Kupa's songs. Her vocals fit well with this tougher approach and she's able to whip up some serious emotional punch when things get loud, almost as 8/

Jul 10,  · While there are no bad songs on Hide And Seek, there’s a little bit of filler (which is understandable enough in a band of this infancy), and it’s the moments when the tempo is dropped a bit that are the most successful – the aforementioned We Won’t Go There or the lovely harmonies on Played for example.

The further Mammoth Penguins strip back ‘Hide And Seek’, the more I like it: “We Won’t Go There” all but mutes the chords while letting Kupa wring out a simple but forceful chorus. It sounds like a jam, in a way: a simple, imperfect runthrough of a song no one’s too worried about perfecting -- the band freak the fuck out and go in for the solos, which is testament to how free this whole thing sounds.7/10(1).

Aug 08,  · Mammoth Penguins is the band Emma Kupa founded in Cambridge after Standard Fare, teaming up with Mark Boxall (bass) and Tom Barden (drums). Their debut album contains 12 songs of grungy anthemic powerpop full of sexual politics, relationships and regrets, reflecting an older outlook that bruises as easily as its younger version.
